In the case of those that are upholstered in fabric, it is enough to pass the vacuum cleaner and something deeper is required, brushing them with soap and water or some special cleaning product, to remove the dirt.
The first thing that is advised is to use a vacuum cleaner with a suction hose to clean the seats of dust, especially in the crevices. An air compressor can also be helpful in loosening trapped dirt.
In this process it is important to ensure that the hose fitting does not come into contact with the leather to avoid scratches and other damage.
Once the dust has been removed by vacuuming, it is recommended to wipe the seats with a microfiber cloth to remove any dirt from the seats. A toothbrush can also be helpful in getting rid of buildup.
For best results, ideally moisten the cloth or toothbrush with a cleaner formulated for leather. In case you don’t want to spend money, you can use a mixture of vinegar and water in equal proportions.
It is important to avoid spraying the seats directly with the cleaning fluid or mixture. Also, special care must be taken with perforated leather, as these holes can attract moisture. When cleaning this type of leather, use less cleaning fluid on the cloth. If a large amount of stain remover is used, moisture can be absorbed by the seats and cause problems such as mildew.
In self-service stores or in parts and accessories stores, leather conditioners are offered. Here it’s important to avoid products that contain ingredients like silicones, waxes, and petroleum distillates, as they can build up over time and dull the finish on your skin.
To apply the conditioner, pour a small amount directly onto a clean microfiber cloth. Once applied, let it rest for about an hour before putting anything in contact with the leather.
During this time, the car should be placed in a shady location, as sunlight can inhibit the conditioner’s ability to be properly absorbed into the leather. After application, a clean cloth should be used to gently buff the seats.
If leather upholstery is to look its best, leather should be conditioned two to three times a year.
It is also important to mention that the ease of cleaning the seats is in proportion to the regularity that is done, so as not to waste them.
